With so many different coding platforms available to you and your class, it’s hard to know which one will be best for your students. Plus, if you’re not comfortable coding yourself, this curriculum expectation can feel overwhelming.
Don’t fret, friend – we’re here to help.
We’ve teamed up with Minecraft: Education Edition to bring you this 2-Part co-taught lesson series, specific for your Grade 2 and 3 students, to help everyone feel more confident and comfortable coding. Plus, we’ll also meet some amazing individuals from the Minecraft: Education Edition team to explore how coding and problem-solving have supported their careers.
Two co-taught lessons to make teaching coding simple
On Monday, June 6th and Wednesday, June 8th, both at 1:00pm EDT | 10:00am PDT, we’ll virtually join your class and co-teach a coding lesson with you – no experience required!
Joining your class through a live stream video, we’ll facilitate two lessons introducing how to code with MakeCode Blocks inside Minecraft: Education Edition. Your class will gain confidence in using code to learn and solve problems throughout this co-taught lesson series.
Focusing on Grade 2 and Grade 3 curriculum expectations, these lessons will explore STEM-related careers, strengthen students’ ability to problem solve and think critically, support digital literacy and meet grade-level coding expectations.
Coding with MakeCode & Python inside Minecraft: Education Edition

Whether or not you’re familiar with Minecraft: Education education, we know your students love this game, so why not use it to teach your students how to code?!
We’ll also support you each step of the way. Through our 2-part co-taught lesson series, you don’t need to be an expert in coding or Minecraft!

Fancy having a co-teacher for 2 lessons?
On Tuesday, June 7th and Thursday, June 9th, both at 1:00pm EDT | 10:00am PDT, we’ll virtually join your class and co-teach a coding lesson with you – no experience required!
Joining your class through a live stream video, we’ll facilitate two lessons to level up your student’s coding experience inside Minecraft: Education Edition.
The lessons will begin using MakeCode Blocks and then move into text-based coding in Python, which will focus on control structures such as loops and conditional statements, and how to write efficient code.
Each lesson and activity will dive deeper into Grade 7 and Grade 8 curriculum expectations and transferable skills such as STEM-related careers, critical thinking, collaboration and innovation.
The Lesson Schedule
Part 1 begins with a Launch Party where you and your students will code alongside special guests who work at Minecraft! No prior coding experience is required, and you don’t even need to have Minecraft: Education Edition installed. Talk about easy!
Part 2 brings back members of The Cobblestone Collective to get you and your class started on your Coding Crate which includes additional resources that will easily help you and your class continue your coding journey.
After the Lessons
Your class’s coding journey doesn’t end here, and neither does the support from us!
Continue learning with our 5-part Cobblestone Crate. By the end of the crate lessons, your students will understand how to solve problems through coding and how they can alter code to provide different outcomes.

Each lesson showcases the ideas and strategies allowing both the teacher and students to learn new skills through modelling.

During the livestream lesson, we’ll be using an interactive form. The form only has two questions:
- Your first name (or your teacher’s name – and optional!)
- Your answer to the question asked
This allows us to interact with your class, while keeping their personal information safe.
Yes! For the best experience, we suggest that each student has their own device, connected to the internet for the duration of the lesson.
Students also need Minecraft: Education Edition downloaded and installed on their device. To learn more about downloading Minecraft: Education Edition, click here.
If you’re not sure how to install Minecraft: Education Edition on your student’s devices, please reach out to your school’s IT Team.
Yes, all students (and you!) need Minecraft: Education Edition usernames and passwords.
As usernames and passwords are unique to each school, please connect with your school’s IT Team to find out your school board’s log-in information.
For the launch lesson, all you need is a device, connected to the internet for each student. No other set-up is required!
For the second lesson, we’ll be coding inside Minecraft: Education Edition. Your student’s devices will need Minecraft: Education Edition installed and a username/password to log in.
After the first lesson you’ll receive an email from us with all of the instructions on how to set this up! We’ll also be available via email if you have any questions along the way.
Similar to the meal plans such as Hello Fresh and Chef’s Plate, Cobblestone Crate lesson plans are equally easy to prepare, where most of the ‘ingredients’ are included, yet will still allow you to ‘spice it up’ with ingredients from your own pedagogical pantry.
Added bonus: Unlike Hello Fresh, our ingredients won’t expire, so you can use these lesson plan ideas whenever it fits your schedule best.
Each activity inside the Crate is designed to take approximately 1-2 hours to complete. You may choose to work through all of the activities together as a class or assign them as an independent study for your students – both options work!
