Mindfulness Strategies for Back-to-School – A Minecraft: Education Edition Co-Taught Lesson

Going back to school comes with a lot of feelings. Let's talk about them!

As classrooms welcome back students, talking about those feelings, implementing strategies to reduce overwhelm, anxiety and stress are key to setting up your classroom routine.

Though, talking about those feelings can be uncomfortable and challenging for a lot of people.  That’s why we have partnered up with Minecraft: Education Edition to bring this 3-part series to help start those conversations.

Join us on September 14th, 15th and 16th from 1-2:30 pm EDT as we explore the Minecraft: Education Edition world, Mindful Knight to explore mindfulness practices together.  Grade 4 to 8 classes are invited to join us.

Each day, we will hear from a new guest speaker on how their journey with anxiety, overwhelm and mindfulness, learn a new mindfulness strategy and complete a build challenge using MinecraftEDU.

Lesson One: Music & Mindfulness

Join us as we explore how turning on your favourite tunes helps our brain reduce stress and anxiety.  We’ll explore the science behind the brain and hear how music helps not only the younger generation heal.  Once we’ve explored music, we’ll dive into Minecraft: Education Edition and start to learn some of the strategies the NPCs suggest to practice mindfulness.

Lesson Two: Mindset & Mindfulness

Athletes who compete need to train their brains as much as they train their bodies.  Inside this final lesson, we’ll learn some strategies that athletes use to calm their nerves and get into the zone.  Come to this lesson with your questions to ask this Canadian Athlete.  After, we’ll finish exploring the Mindful Knight Minecraft: Education Edition world.

Lesson Three: Create your Happy Place

Now that we’ve learned strategies from Room 217 and a Tokyo 2020 Athlete, as well as from our NPCs in Minecraft: Education Edition, let’s put that knowledge into practice with a build challenge.  Using Minecraft:EE, students will be challenged to build their happy place – an ideal place that would be home to all of their strategies used to reduce anxiety, calm nerves and practice mindfulness.  What will your happy place look like?

Tools Required

Each student will need access to:

  • A device with Minecraft: Education Edition installed
  • A username and password to log into Minecraft: Education Edition (provided by your school board)
