Earth Week with Sustainability City Lessons

April 19, 2021 at 8:00 am - April 23, 2021 at 5:00 pm EDT

Free Funded by Minecraft

Join our LIVE co-taught lessons

Join us twice a day as we explore a different part of Sustainability City created by Minecraft: Education Edition. Each co-taught lesson is 90-minutes and features an industry expert, knowledgeable about the sustainability lesson being taught! Learn, play, and build as we explore sustainable processes at work.

What is a “co-taught lesson?”

Think of us as your virtual guest speakers.

Let us take on the lesson planning and facilitation for you. We’ll even provide you with build challenges to continue your building and learning after the lesson.

We will join your class through a Teams Live video feed, allowing your students to join with you from the classroom or wherever they are learning virtually.

Teaching in-person?  Project us on the screen if you are in-person.

Teaching virtually?  Send the Livestream link straight to your students to join.

Plus, 2021 is already hectic and overwhelming enough, so no prior experience is required by you!

The Lesson Topics

There are 6 unique lessons to learn from throughout the week!  All lessons are available in English, with one lesson available en français and one lesson available en español.

Sustainable Food Production

English: April 19th – 10am & 1pm EDT
French: April 22nd – 1pm EDT

Beginning at the town’s grocery store and ending at a honey stand, students explore sustainable practices for every step of food production. By visiting a farm, a waste facility, and a recycling plant, they’ll learn that the food they purchase is made up of multiple products and services, and each should be sustainable.

Outflow Order

English: April 21st – 10am EDT
Spanish: April 21st – 1pm EDT

In this lesson, students will learn about the mysterious world of water treatment and water outflow. They’ll discover how water gets from their drains to the treatment plant, how biosolids contribute to fertilizer, and how treated water returns to their homes.

It’s Good to Be Green

English: April 20th – 1pm EDT

Students will explore a green commercial building in the center of the city. They’ll be able to explain how using natural materials can ensure that a building will have sustainable practices.

Dependable Forests

English: April 22th – 1pm EDT

Students step into a sustainable forest, starting at a lumberyard where they’ll see stored lumber intended for buildings, paper, or yard material. Then they hike into the woods to see what a 40-year sustainable forest cycle looks like. The journey continues down a trail where learners encounter a conservationist and a local hiker. Throughout their trek, students will come to understand the social, economic, and environmental impacts of responsible forestry.

Sustainable Home

English: April 20th – 10am EDT

This lesson visits a home built using sustainable materials and explores the features that contribute to efficiency. Students make connections with other areas of the city where the house’s materials originate. Throughout the experience, they’ll come to understand the complexities of creating a sustainable home and what they can do to contribute to energy efficiency.

Alternative Energy

English: April 23rd – 10am EDT

Students begin their exploration at a hydropower plant, learning how it works from friendly non-player characters. Once they‘ve passed through the plant, they climb a ladder to explore wind power and even have a chance to restart one of the turbines for the plant’s workers! Finally, learners hop into a minecart to travel the power lines and see how the plant powers the entire city.

You have questions. We've got answers.

Nope – that would be a lot of work and we’re all about saving you time!

Please just register the educators of your class (teacher, EA, support staff, etc.)

Please do not register your students.

YES! We know things change quickly in the world of educators (especially when we are broadcasting across time zones), so all of our lessons are recorded.

Sign up for the ‘live lesson’ and you’ll receive the recording 24-hours after the lesson takes place.

Best part?  You can use the recorded lesson anytime that works for you!

Nothing!  We want to keep all student information private and will never ask you to share it with us.

During the livestream lesson, we’ll be using an interactive form.  The form only has two questions:

  • Your first name (or your teacher’s name – and optional!)
  • Your answer to the question asked

This allows us to interact with your class, while keeping their personal information safe.
