Your Language Arts Lesson Reimagined
June 21 - June 24Funded by Code with Google
CS First for 4th to 6th Grade Classes
Math has calculators and science has bunsen burners, but what cool tools does Language Arts have? Sure, Google Docs is great for typing, though what if there was something else that could inspire your students and augment the writing process?
Let us introduce … coding!
We know that coding is a great way to help our students become computational thinkers, innovative designers and creative communicators, but we also know that teaching coding may feel overwhelming, especially if it’s a skill you haven’t been able to develop yet yourself. And with so many coding platforms and programs available, it’s difficult to know which one will support student learning (and yours) the best.
CS First is a computer science curriculum for 4th-8th graders that makes coding easy to teach and fun to learn. The best part? It’s free of charge.
What better way to learn to code, than by integrating it directly into the curriculum! Join us for our CS First co-taught lesson series where we’ll guide you and your class every step of the way.
Let's reimagine your next language arts lesson together
We collaborated with the CS First team to bring you a 2-part coding series to help both you and your class get coding!
On DATE and DATE, at TIME
Joining your class through a live stream video, we’ll facilitate two lessons with you and your class as we learn to code together using CS First. We’ll be focusing on the Storytelling Unit inside CS First to blend the world of Language Arts and coding.
The Lesson Schedule
After the Lessons
This is the 60-minute launch party lesson to begin your class’s coding adventure. Get ready to be inspired and excited to code and learn how coding can become just another tool in your toolkit to express yourself and create! No prior setup is required.
After Lesson 1, you’ll receive a guide walking you through setting up CS First for your class. Not to worry, it’s straightforward. If you require support, you’ll also receive an invitation to join us for our Office Hours to get all of your CS First set-up and coding questions answered.
Now that CS First is set up for your class, we’re ready to really dive in! Our on-camera team will join your class to kick off the Storytelling Unit. We’ll guide you through the sign-in process, all the way through the first lesson.
Your class’s coding journey doesn’t end here, and neither does the support from us! Continue learning with our Storytelling Cobblestone Crate which includes up to 5 additional hours of coding inspiration and lesson support.
Thank you to the CS First Team for making this workshop available to all classrooms free of charge!
Still have QUestions?
Your questions answered:
Think of us as a virtual guest speaker.
Our facilitation team handles the lesson planning and facilitation of a lesson with your teachers and their students together.
Each lesson showcases the ideas and strategies allowing both the teacher and students to learn new skills through modelling.
Nope – that would be a lot of work and we’re all about saving you time!
Please just register the educators of your class (teacher, EA, support staff, etc.)
Please do not register your students.
Nothing! We want to keep all student information private and will never ask you to share it with us.
During the livestream lesson, we’ll be using an interactive form. The form only has two questions:
- Your first name (or your teacher’s name – and optional!)
- Your answer to the question asked
This allows us to interact with your class, while keeping their personal information safe.
Yes! For the best experience, we suggest that each student has their own device, connected to the internet for the duration of the lesson.
Before Lesson 1, no set-up is required.
Before Lesson 2, you’ll need to have CS First set up for your class.
No need to worry, we’ll share our set-up instructions with you after Lesson 1 which takes all the guesswork out of setting up CS First. Plus, you can also join your District’s Office Hour to get all of your questions answered.
Similar to popular meal-kit delivery services, Cobblestone Crate lesson plans are equally easy to prepare, where most of the ‘ingredients’ are included, yet will still allow you to ‘spice it up’ with ingredients from your own pedagogical pantry.
Added bonus: Unlike a meal kit, our ingredients won’t expire, so you can use these lesson plan ideas whenever it fits your schedule best.
Each activity inside the Crate is designed to take approximately 5 hours to complete. You may choose to work through all of the activities together as a class or assign them as an independent study for your students – both options work!
By registering for this co-taught lesson series, you’ll receive a Cobblestone Crate created just for your class to continue your journey in coding using CS First.
