CS First Lessons January 2023 to June 2023
January 24 - May 2
Free Funded by Google CanadaBelow, you will find further details about each of the upcoming co-taught lessons and asynchronous resources for the 2022-2023 school year.
This series of lessons run from January 24th until May 2nd.
By registering for a lesson below, you’ll receive a link to join the live lesson, as well as to the recording, alonog with access to additional asynchronous resources inside the Cobblestone Crate, so you continue the learning with your class.

INSIDE EACH LESSON PACKAGE
Co-Taught Lesson
Join Canadian Googlers live to kick off each coding adventure with your class! The Googlers will be coding alongside your class, providing feedback and showcasing how to work through challenges, debug your program, and never give up. These co-taught lessons will walk through the first activity of the Cobblestone Crate, live with Canadian Googlers!
Coding Crate
Through the associated Cobblestone Crate, your students’ coding journey continues even after the lesson. Through this asynchronous resource, students will continue to learn how coding and your subject area are integrated through recorded instruction videos, CS First projects, and more. This resource can be completed independently, or as a whole class.
Educator Support
You’re never alone! Through our Kick-Off and “Getting Started” lessons, our on-camera team will support your class through signing into CS First and getting started with the Coding Crate. You’ll also receive our Teacher Guide to make setting up CS First with your class simple. Finally, educator support is only ever an email away from the team here at The Cobblestone Collective.
The Lesson Schedule
Kick-Off Celebration
Tuesday, January 24th - 1pm EST | 10am PST
Join us as we kick off our learning together. Inside this 60-minute lesson, we’ll hear from Canadian Googlers about their pathway to working for Google Canada and how they use STEAM in their jobs everyday. Your class will also get to ask the Googlers their questions during the Q&A portion of this lesson.
After exploring career pathways, we’ll dive into CS First and code together. Your students will be coding alongside the Googlers and learning from each other’s programs!
You’ll also receive access to our “Getting Started” lesson where The Cobblestone Collective team will help you and your class get set up and get logged into CS First.
Storytelling through Dialogue (Language Arts - Grade 4 to 6)
Tuesday, February 7th - 1pm EST | 10am PST
Let’s tell an interactive story together! Join us for this 60-minute lesson where we’ll focus on telling a story, using dialogue and code. As we code our story, we’ll explore the concepts of character selection, setting vs scene, and how characters speak and respond all while using control structures, event triggers, and sequencing.
Habitats & The Environment (Science - Grade 4 to 6)
Tuesday, February 14th - 1pm EST | 10am PST
Review and practice are key to learning new, subject-specific terminology! Inside this 60-minute lesson, we’ll code a guessing game together to help us learn the definitions of some of your specific science unit terms! We’ll use loops, control structures, and conditional statements to create a game to help each student learn and practice.
Atomic Structure (Science - Grade 7 to 9)
Tuesday, February 21st - 1pm EST | 10am PST
Through defined counts, conditional statements, sub-programs and loops, students will begin identifying and building different atoms through code inside CS First. Using code to animate their project, students will simulate the appearance of electrons.
Explorer la musique et le son (Musique - 4e à 6e année)
mardi 4 avril - 13h00 HAE | 10h00 HAP
Exploring Music & Sound (Music - Grade 4 to 6)
Tuesday, April 11th - 1pm EDT | 10am PDT
Inside this lesson, students will experiment and try out different instrument sounds and musical notes to create rhythm and a tune. We’ll explore pitch, beats, rests and tempo all while using code and concepts (loops, event triggers, sequencing, and more) to bring the music to life.
Predicting Probability (Mathematics - Grade 4 to 6)
Tuesday, April 18th - 1pm EDT | 10am PDT
Students will use terms such as unlikely, likely, certain, impossible and 50/50 to create an interactive story. When combined with computer science concepts, such as loops and conditional statements, students will have the opportunity to code a story that showcases their understanding of the probability of an outcome occurring.
Solving Algebraic Equations (Mathematics - Grade 7 to 9)
Tuesday, May 2nd - 1pm EDT | 10am PDT
Through trial and error, students will use their knowledge of variables to solve problems using area and perimeter through an existing Scratch for CS First program. After independent exploration, students will then be able to use their understanding to create a program to find the volume of a given shape through the use of loops, conditional statements, and sub-programs.
Thank you Google Canada for co-creating and funding these co-taught lessons and CObblestone Crates so that they can be free of charge for classrooms everywhere.
