Mindfulness Strategies for Back to School with Minecraft: Education Edition

On September 14th, 15th and 16th we explored mindfulness strategies with partners across Canada and Minecraft: Education Edition using the world, Mindful Knight.  These three co-taught lessons explore a variety of strategies, as well as a bit of science, to help both students and educators be present and mindful for this new school year.

While this conversation was specifically around back-to-school, these strategies and lessons can be used anytime throughout the school year.

The first lesson welcomed the team from MusicCare by Room 217 and a Toronto Symphony Musician. We explored how music can help us calm our bodies and minds, what to look for in music specific for mindfulness practice and practiced these different strategies with live music played by the flutist!

Lesson 2 explore how athletes, specifically Canadian Olympic athletes reduce anxiety and overwhelm right before a big event.  We welcomed Head to Head and Maxwell Lattimer to our lesson to hear about Maxwell’s journey to both the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympics.  Unfortunately, Maxwell’s conversation is not a part of the lesson 2 recording due to copyright restrictions.  We do encourage you to reach out to the team at Head to Head to see about bringing an Olympian to your classroom.

The final lesson brings together everything we learned into a Minecraft: Education Edition build challenge.  This build challenge has three parts and can be completed in 90 minutes (though, your students may want to continue building after).
